And Now, Your Sunday Night Norwegian Jam: Aurora, “It Happened Quiet” [VIDEO]

Music • Views: 29,712

YouTube

When I started watching this I thought I’d probably have to stop because it was way too precious for its own good. But for some reason I hung in, and even though it’s still very precious, this is an extraordinarily beautiful performance, live in the studio with no technological help.

Aurora performs ‘It Happened Quiet’ live in The Current studio. The song is from her 2018 album, ‘Infections of a Different Kind, Step 1.’

Here’s a nice little audio gem. I saw Ry and David play together in Seattle, with Ry’s son Joachim (on percussion, as in this vid) but I swear, Joachim was smaller, without facial hair, and fewer instruments around him. Must have been 6 mos. to 5 years earlier.

Kentucky governor signs bill outlawing sex between people and animals

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - It’s official: Bestiality will become illegal in Kentucky.

Gov. Matt Bevin signed a bill Tuesday that outlaws sex between humans and animals in the Bluegrass State.

Senate Bill 67 prohibits sexual contact between a person and an animal, defining sexual contact as “any act committed between a person and an animal for the purpose of sexual arousal, sexual gratification, abuse or financial gain.”

Now if they can only get rid of McConnell.

Washington Monthly: How Trump Exploited the Material He Knew the Russians Had Stolen

Points out that a lot of the time when DT was calling on the Russians to hack, and was praising them and Wikileaks, he had received classified briefings, telling him what was happening and that Russia was pushing his candidacy.

On its own, this might not be the kind of thing that qualifies as evidence of a criminal conspiracy. But what we have all witnessed with our own eyes is the fact that the president welcomed Russian interference when he exploited material gained via the commission of a crime that was part of an attempt to support him in the 2016 election.

Remember the bitching the same people were doing when everyone was asked to move away from incandescent light bulbs to CFL? Now we are all moving on to LED, I imagine there are still people clinging to incandescent bulbs, probably from the cases of them they bought when they first thought they would never have them again.

People get used to what they do and how they do it, and sometimes refuse to change even if it is better, cheaper, etc. I guess any changes threaten their world. And any threat has to be dealt with by being assholes about it.

The next Japanese era will be REIWA or 令和. I haven’t gotten an English translation yet.

I watched the announcement on streaming TV. Interestingly, the actual display of the new era’s characters was done by means of holding up a picture frame, in which the characters, written in very large calligraphy, had been mounted.

The Reiwa era starts on May 1, with the new emperor, Naruhito.

I just read a multi-forwarded email about local county politics. Supposedly the Republicans are encouraging conservative Democrats to show up at the big Democratic Party meeting and elect the not-a-socialist guy who is pro life and pro guns and pro border crisis as the Party Chair so we can have two Republican parties, I guess.

At least the guy I got it from didn’t include everybody’s email address in the header like the other forwarders did.

The meeting was yesterday and I have received no further info. I should check my email more frequently or less frequently, not sure which.

Interesting!
Those muscle receptors may be the root of a problem one of my sisters has. She was always the klutzy one, knocking things over, falling a lot. Finally (in her early 50’s) went and got a diagnosis — I’d have to ask her the technical/medical term for it, but the upshot is that her brain can’t tell precisely where her hands or feet are. When she reaches for something, the object is inches away from where she ‘feels’ it is.

Getting the diagnosis was a relief for her — it’s not klutz, it’s an identifiable physical condition. Doesn’t relieve the condition, but knowing what’s wrong she’s better able to adjust for it.

Proprioception is the sense that tells you how your body is disposed in space. Oliver Sacks dealt with the condition of its lack in one of the chapters of The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, I think.

Oh they DO have a clue. They believe that the Rapture is coming very soon and will take them up to heaven before Armageddon.

I don’t think it’s about what they believe so much as it’s about what they desire and consequently what they’re unbelievably jealous of and angry about, which is allowing existence to continue without them. This movement is overwhelmingly comprised of an aging population that is religious in theory but has deep seated subconscious doubts about the existence of God and is deeply resentful of younger generations who will outlive them. As a result of this unresolved conflict their operating principal has become if they can’t live forever then nobody else should be allowed to live at all. While the original motive behind the End Days / Armageddon mythology might have been allegorical, or to give people who felt trapped in a harsh world some imminent reason to hold on and escape a promised eternity in Hell, it has become an even more toxic motive to deprive future generations of the future itself.

Back to another hobbyhorse: a lot of what is passed of as “support for Israel” has little to do with any concern for Israel or the Jews, it is because Fundamentalist Christians seek a resurgent Israel in order to help fulfill their End-Times death cult prophecies and kick-start Armageddon (in which all Jews, Muslims and sundry other infidels & non-believers will be cast into the Fiery Pit).

I was fortunate to grow up around Chicago at a time when there were no less than three “underground” FM music stations that played all sorts of alternative and album rock music and did much to expand my musical horizons. I recall hearing that LJB song as a teenager.

Dread Pirate Union AFL-CIO  Apr 1, 2019 • 1:33:01am

Weed prices are dropping in California.

A recent report by Vessel Logistics, a San Francisco-based cannabis distribution company, estimates California is growing at least five times the amount of cannabis that’s actually sold.

“As the commercial farmers have come on board and brought Big Ag technology with them, they’re able to produce a great quality product at much higher volume and at much lower cost,” said Vessel Logistics CEO Daniel D’Ancona. “It’s disrupted the whole market.”

D’Ancona predicts the price for wholesale cannabis plants could drop by half this year.

A year ago we were at $1,200 a pound. Coming up on this harvest, we’re going to see $600 a pound really quickly.”

Once the price falls below $200 a pound, he said, that could eliminate 75 per cent of the current cannabis farms because the margins will be too small to make a profit.

“The product will be selling for less than the cost of production.”

Article is about wine growers planting weed and the market collapsing on them, but wine will always be profitable for them. I don’t know why you’d waste good grape growing for something that can grow anywhere else.

For a fairly sizeable fee, an entrance exam, and, beyond that, a who-do-you-know basis. It is “public” in the sense that one didn’t need to have a title to get in, but the requirements in order to get a place at the school prevent most of the general public from having a chance.

You know, when I look at the Book of Revelation, the only conclusion I can arrive it as that it was either:

1) An allegory that probably made perfect sense to the audience for whom it was written

2) John of Patmos (the putative author) accidentally ate some bad sardines or something and fell victim to fevered hallucinations

3) John of Patmos accidentally suffered from ergot poisoning, or accidentally ingested some other natural hallucinogen and was tripping balls and, not knowing why that was, interpreted his hallucinations as some sort of divine message

4) The theory advanced by D. H. Lawrence, namely, that the book is a rewrite of earlier source material dealing with a pagan mystery religion or the theory of Barbara Whitlock, that the book is a rewrite of an earlier Zoroastrian text.

Or all four at once.

It’s been a while since I took my Bible as literature course, but I do remember there was a lot of cross-pollination in those days among Greek, Roman, Persian, Egyptian and other Mediterranean cultures, with a smattering of ideas from the Indian subcontinent. It’s not like each of those cultures built walls around themselves.

Sure; look at ideas like dying and rising gods, such as Osiris. All those ideas were floating around in the ancient Mediterranean world - none of those cultures existed in any kind of vacuum.

Apocalyptic literature was being written by Jews of the first century (e. g. Daniel, 2 Esdras and the Book of Enoch, also some “day of the Lord” writing in the OT). Revelations is different in making the “redeemed” Jews of the Christian sect — not altogether separated from Judaism at the time — the redeemed, instead of the Jewish nation.

My understanding is mostly 1. It was a thinly veiled commentary on the Emperor Nero dressed up in fairly bog standard apocalyptic language of the day. So standard that when they were putting together the canon in ~325 they felt that they had to include some kind of apocalyptic book due to their popularity with the masses and John’s was considered the mildest and most rational.

No. It’s not about that.

In Texas (and 5 other states) you cannot buy a car directly from a manufacturer. You must go through a dealer. That’s not Tesla’s business model.

There is a law going through the Lege (as Molly Ivins called it) to end the dealer required law.

Federal district judge rules that a North Carolina charter school cannot mandate that girls can only wear skirts as part of its dress code.

blogs.edweek.org

“Yes, the boys at the school must conform to a uniform policy as well,” Senior U.S. District Judge Malcolm J. Howard wrote. “But plaintiffs in this case have shown that the girls are subject to a specific clothing requirement that renders them unable to play as freely during recess, requires them to sit in an uncomfortable manner in the classroom, causes them to be overly focused on how they are sitting, distracts them from learning, and subjects them to cold temperatures on their legs … .”

The judge’s March 28 opinion in Peltier v. Charter Day School Inc. is noteworthy in several respects. Howard said most challenges to public school dress codes have been based on First Amendment free expression concerns, not gender discrimination.

“Arguably, the most analogous cases are the hair length cases of the Vietnam era,” the judge said, and those were decided long before the U.S. Supreme Court’s 1996 decision in United States v. Virginia, which required the admission of women to the all-male Virginia Military Institute and established that governments defending gender-based policies must show an “exceedingly persuasive justification” for them.

The school had argued that skirts for the girls was part of its “traditional values” mission, and some other argle-bargle. Students, with the assistance of the ACLU, took the school to court, and won their case.

Judge Howard was a Reagan appointee and attended West Point. One of those activist judges we hear so much about.

I’d consider changing the detergent used first, before swapping dishwashers. And make sure the rinse aid is also getting it done as well as checking the filter to see that it isn’t gummed up.

But if you do go with a new dishwasher, good luck. I had a Kenmore that washed great, but it failed after just 5 years. I replaced that one with a Bosch, and it does great at cleaning - but drying plastics is not its thing.

I was busy and only got to see the cute vegetable kids video hours after you posted it. Something about the dancers tickled my memory neurons, because their dance moves reminded me of the dancers backing up Kyary Pamyu Pamyu. And lo! They are the same!

Also those little kids are now 19 and 20, and one of them has “graduated” from the group, according to Teh Wiki Font of All Knowledge.

Here is their website tempurakidz.asobisystem.com

“Cider Cider” was one of their first hits as Tempura Kidz. For the produce section video, they had a different name.

Kawaii (cuteness) is a real thing in Japan, but it has some creepy aspects. One subgenre has spread to China as JK fashion, in which college kids dress in Japanese high school uniforms. Some of my students have come to class JK style. The other part of JK — the sex part — has not crossed over, AFAIK. en.wikipedia.org

My student Nicole told me Chinese high school uniforms are ugly (they are), so she and others like to wear Japanese high school uniforms because they are more attractive. She came to class in a gray skirt, white shirt, blue blazer and red bow tie.

I really don’t get it. My daughter hated her school uniforms when we were in South Africa.

Germany also has a highly anachronistic and regulated system for cars and spare parts. When I first came over, I had German friends ask me to bring some car parts with them. I assumed that they were made in Mexico or Brazil, but no, turns out they were original Bosch automotive parts, just 30% cheaper in the USA than in Germany.

Following comments apply only to the post-Nixon world:

Democratic Congresses always did their jobs because they cared about the institutions. Republican Congresses — not so much. You think they did their job when they investigated Benghazi over and over and over again? When they sabotaged anything that Obama proposed? When they refused to consider Merrick Garland? When Newt Gingrich had a temper tantrum and shut down the government in the 1990’s?

The media? they certainly didn’t do their job when Bush 43 was leading us to war against Iraq. And they were responsible for promoting Trump because he was good for their bottom line and they did all they could to damage Hillary because too many were misogynists at heart.
